Assembly Election 2016: Which candidates lost big time this poll season

Thursday was not just another day for any of the four states and one union territory which were awaiting Assembly poll results.

While West Bengal kept no room for surprise by re-electing TMC to power, there were instances of jolting defeats in the case of a number of constituencies.

Here’s a look at the biggest candidates who just did not have the stars in their favour.

Assam

BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa lost from Titabor constituency as outgoing chief minister Tarun Gogoi won for the fourth consecutive term. He was defeated by 17,495 votes.

Congress’ Niren Deka lost in Jalukbari constituency by a record 85,935 votes.

Sitting Congress MLA Rajib Lochan Pegu lost Majuli seat to BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal by a margin of 18,923 votes.

Another sitting Congress MLA and former minister Akon Bora was defeated by former minister and BJP candidate Atul Bora by huge margin of 1,30,197 votes.

Other sitting Congress MLAs to have lost in their constituencies were Atuwa Munda, Arun Phukan, Gautam Roy and Aroti Hazarika Kachari.

Phukan lost by a margin of 40,193 votes in Bokakhat constituency to another candidate named Atul Bora who is the AGP president.

Roy, who is a six-time Congress MLA, was defeated by AIUDF’s Suzam Uddin Laskar by a margin of 15,084 votes in Katlichera.

In Dergaon constituency, Kachari lost her seat to Bhabendra Nath Bharali of Asom Gana Parishad by 16,227 votes.

Former union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar of Congress was defeated by BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi in Moran constituency.

AGP’s Jyoti Prasad Das lost to Congress’ Nandita Das by 17,600 votes in Boko SC.

Puducherry

Senior DMK leader AMH Nazeem lost to AIADMK’s KAU Aasana by 20 votes in Karaikal South while in Mahe constituency, Congress heavyweight E Valsaraj was defeated by independent candidate V Ramachandran.

Independent S Ramesh was defeated in Kadirgamam, a relatively new constituency which was hosting its second election, by AINRC’s NSJ Jayabal alias Ayyanar by a margin of 3,802 votes.

Kerala

Excise Minister K Babu was defeated by a margin of 4,467 votes by M Swaraj of CPM in Tripunithura constituency. Babu had resigned in January after a vigilance court in Thrissur had asked the Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau to register a case against him in the bar bribery scandal.

Congress’ Mambaram Divakaran was defeated by CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan in Dharamadom in Kannur district by 36,905 votes.

Agriculture Minister KP Mohanan faced defeat with Shailaja Teacher (CPM-LDF alliance) leading with a margin of 12,291 votes in Kuthuparamba constituency.

P Krishnachand (JDU-UDF) in Elathur lost to AK Saseendran (NCP-LDF alliance) by 29,057 votes.

CPM’s KD Prasenan defeated Kusala Kumar (Kc-M-UDF) by a margin of 36,606 votes in Alathur constituency.

BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan, cricketer Sreesanth and former BJP State president V Muraleedharan were all trailing in their respective constituencies.

Tamil Nadu AIADMK nominee R Pannerselvam lost seat in Thiruvarur as the 93-year-old DMK President Karunanidhi won with a margin of 68,366 votes.

While AIADMK’s S Raja lost to TK Rajeswaran (Congress) by 37,374 votes at Sankagir, DMK’s AP Ragupathy was defeated by 19,723 votes in Melur.

MMK’s Nazir Ahmed faced defeat by a margin of 28,006 votes against the winning AIADMK candidate Balasubramani in Ambur.

N Natarajan contesting on AIADMK ticket was defeated by Congress’ Jerome Arockiaraj G by 21,894 votes in Tiruchirappalli-East.

AIADMK’s V Radhakrishnan faced defeat as as K Anbazhagan led by 4,778 votes in Mayiladuthurai.

Several of AIADMK’s sitting ministers are trailing in the Tamil Nadu.

West Bengal

Roopa Ganguly of BJP and Bhaichung Bhutia of the Trinamool Congress have lost from their constituencies of Howrah Uttar and Siliguri respectively. Ganguly was recently caught on camera in her constituency slapping a woman supporter of Mamata Banerjee while Bhutia is the former captain of the Indian football team.

CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra, who was the Opposition leader in the outgoing Assembly, lost his Narayangarh seat in West Midnapore district to Trinamool Congress nominee Prodyut Kumar Ghosh by 13,589 votes.

Congress’ Santosh Kumar Pathak lost Howrah North seat to former Bengal cricket captain Laxmi Ratan Shuklaby by 26,959 votes. Shuklaby fought on a Trinamool ticket.

Congress-Left alliance lost in Chowringhee as Congress’ Somendranath Mitra lost to TMC’s Nayana Bandopadhyay by a margin of 13,211 votes.
