With even more roles being specifically etched for women, Bollywood has come a long way. Not only are actresses daring to tread on the offbeat path but they're also working extremely hard to get into their character and portray it to the best of their ability. No longer are actresses content playing meek, submissive characters. Instead they're constantly on the lookout to showcase their talent.

Take for instance, Alia Bhatt, who will be seen in a completely de-glam role in the upcoming 'Udta Punjab'. The actress, playing the role of a Bihari migrant, was not the first choice for the role, if sources are to be believed. While Alia has already shown her acting prowess in a number of movies especially 'Highway', she is yet to appear in a career defining role.
Other actresses who are daring to step out of their comfort zone include Sonakshi Sinha with 'Akira', Kangana Ranaut with 'Simran' and 'Rani Lakshmibai' and Shraddha Kapoor with 'Haseena'. While Kangana Ranaut and Vidya Balan are known to take up challenging roles, other actresses aren't that open to experimenting although there have been exceptions.

When asked about her role as Dawood Ibrahim's sister Haseena Parkar in the biopic, Shraddha chooses to avoid the subject, probably wanting to let her work speak for her. The actress will be seen shown between the ages of 20 and 60 in the film, which requires her to undergo stringent training.
Even Kangana, known for her stellar performances, will be taking a different route and portraying a historical character in an upcoming movie. She will train in horseriding and sword-fighting for her part, it is said.
