I am sure you must have heard the popular phrase “Behind every successful man, there is a woman”, I have a better version of it – “Behind every successful person, there is a supporting partner.” It’s not new for us Indians to attribute titles to wives of ‘someones’ like the wife of a master (teacher) would be called masterni and that of a seth would be called a sethani, irrespective of her profession. Spouses of Bollywood celebrities are no different. These ladies have their own identities but aren't given their due often. They are often relegated to be in the shadow of the achievements of their superstar husbands. Gauri Khan

Mother of three, she is the co-founder of Red Chillies Entertainment and is a famous interior designer. The fashion forward beauty added a feather in her cap by turning into a fashion designer for Satya Paul’s autumn/winter 2015 saree collection. And yea, she is the wife of Shah Rukh Khan. She is the founder of an interior store ‘The White Window’ and has designed houses of big names like Rani Mukerji. She is known for her hilarious yet feminist columns, has authored a book and is the co-owner of production company Hari Om Productions with husband Akshay Kumar.

Kiran Rao

Kiran Rao is an Indian film producer,screenwriter and director and has critically acclaimed films like Peepli Live, Dhobhi Ghat and Ship of Theseus to her credit. Aamir Khan, popular Bollywood actor and Kiran’s husband, supports her in all her endeavours.

Seema Khan

Very few know that Seema Khan was behind Jassi’s look in the popular TV series Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. She is a proud owner of a beauty spa and salon called Kallista, in Mumbai. Her husband Sohail Khan is an Indian producer and actor.

Mana Shetty

Mana Shetty runs a chain of luxury hotels, fashion stores and manages a construction business. She looks after husband Sunil Shetty’s chain of boating clubs. She is also a social worker and helps underprivileged children.

Maheep Kapoor

She is a jewellery designer by profession. She is not only popular in Mumbai’s social circuit but has her loyal customers in the industry like Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Rakhi Sawant. Her creations were also used in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om.

Namrata Shirodkar
