The gross gaming turnover of the Italian gaming market in 2015 was €88.25bn, generating a total GGR of €17.1bn, reports Gioco News in its review of gaming in the country.

Across Italy, there are 278 licences for sports and horse betting, 104 of which are online licences. Bingo has 208 licences, while new slots and VLTs have 13 licences. There were 47,863 shops in 2015, spread across 10,742 licences.

The Lombardy region, whose largest city is Milan, is where most was spent on gaming during the year, a total of €3.1bn. The Lazio region, home to national capital Rome, was the next biggest spender, at €1.69bn, followed by Campania, which includes the city of Naples, with €1.58bn.

AWP machines still drive the national market with GGT of €25.96bn, up from €25.4bn in 2014. VLTs follow with €22.2bn (2014: €21.35bn).

While sports betting gross turnover grew to €5.59bn (from €4.25bn in 2014), horse racing fell to €636m from €683m in the year prior.
