Monsoon reaches south Andaman Sea, says IMD

    Synopsis

Although the IMD has forecast the onset of monsoon to be delayed over the mainland, the onset in the Andaman Sea is expected to happen on the near normal date.

    ET Bureau
PUNE: The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, entire south Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands and some parts of north Andaman Sea on Tuesday.
The normal dates of onset of monsoon defined by the IMD begin only from the northern tip of the Andaman islands. On Tuesday, monsoon winds entered towards the south of this limit.

"Also conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more more parts of south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands and remaining parts of north Andaman Sea during next 3 to 4 days," stated an IMD release.

Although the IMD has forecast the onset of monsoon to be delayed over the mainland, the onset in the Andaman Sea is expected to happen on the near normal date.

Meanwhile, heat wave conditions continued to prevail at most places with severe heat wave at a few places over West Rajasthan; heat wave conditions at a few places over Madhya Pradesh & Vidarbha and at isolated places over Haryana & Delhi, East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra. Strong heat wave is considered to be good for the overall progress of monsoon in the coming days.

Rain occurred at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Tamilnadu and Kerala; at many places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka & Coastal Karnataka; at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal, Rayalaseema, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The rainfall activity is expected to help in reducing the heat wave conditions by May 30.
