When HT spoke to Dr Priyanka Kalia, medical officer with Fortis, whose name and signature was on a medical certificate of a student, said, “Dr Manuj Wadhwa had left Fortis a long time back and his name and my name on the discharge summary of 2016 is impossible. They cannot appear together. I do not understand this. I strongly believe that somebody has forged the papers.”(HT Photo)

The decision was taken after the chief medical officer (CMO), PU, on Tuesday received another ‘false’ medical certificate, allegedly signed by a medical officer of Fortis hospital, SAS Nagar, with a stamp of another doctor who had left the hospital a few years back.

Finding a discharge summary attached to the medical certificate of a student, when the CMO checked with the Fortis doctors, he got to know that Dr Manuj Wadhwa, who was mentioned as the primary consultant in the medical certificate and whose stamp was used, had left Fortis in 2012.

However, when HT spoke to Dr Priyanka Kalia, medical officer with Fortis, whose name and signature was on a medical certificate of a student, said, “Dr Manuj Wadhwa had left Fortis a long time back and his name and my name on the discharge summary of 2016 is impossible. They cannot appear together. I do not understand this. I strongly believe that somebody has forged the papers.”

Taking this into consideration, Bhai Ghanaiya Ji Institute of Health, PU, on Tuesday wrote to the director orthopaedic department, Fortis hospital, SAS Nagar, stating, “We have received a medical certificate from your hospital with UIHD number 00339330, concerning a patient Vijay (name changed), 20-year-old, under consultant Dr Manuj Wadhwa with date of admission April 1, 2016, and April 29, 2016.”

The letter adds, “The case has been diagnosed as ACL tear ligament knee joint with left arthroscopy knee construction left ACL repair.”

“The medical certificate has been signed by Dr Priyanka Kalia, medical officer. You are kindly requested to let us know whether this discharge summary has been issued by your hospital,” the letter states.

Commenting on it, chief medical officer (CMO), PU, Dr Devinder Dhawan said, “Fortis has been conducting a medical camp on the campus and this is how we confirmed that Dr Manuj, whose stamp has been used on the medical certificate, had left Fortis a couple of years back to join Max Hospital.”

Dr Dhawan also submitted a written complaint and a report in this regard to the dean university instructions (DUI).

However, the DUI Prof AK Bhandari said, “Although I am yet to receive the report, we will cancel all certificates of students as received from the CMO office and the benefit of attendance will not be given to them. While as Dr R Gupta has denied of issuing any such certificates to the students, we will probe the matter. Our CMO has already been inquiring into it. This clearly shows that there is some gang of doctors issuing fake certificates to students.”

Meanwhile, president of the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council Jasmeen Kang said, “I am shocked to know that students get fake medical certificates from doctors.”
