Gurgaon: More than 150 students of KR Mangalam University, located on Sohna Road, on Tuesday locked the gates of university campus in protest against the university authorities barring them from taking their exams. The students claimed that the university authorities were using a false pretext of inadequate attendance to harass them and make a fast buck.

Tuesday was the second consecutive day of protests at KR Mangalam University with the protesters having blocked the highway on Monday. The students alleged that the university had allowed some well connected students to sit for the examination despite their being very short of attendance. According to norms, a student needs to log a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible to sit for the examinations and the students were short of that mark. The students first blocked the gate and then forcibly locked it after snatching the keys from the security guards on Tuesday morning.
The protest continued for nearly two hours with the agitated students not allowing students, teaching and non-teaching staff to enter the campus from the main gate till a police team led by Sukhveer Singh, ACP, Sohna, intervened and got the gates opened.
A protesting student said the university was practising double standard. "The rules are meant only for us but not for those with political connections or who are ready to cough up money? While a student with 70% attendance is protesting with us, another with just 4% attendance is being allowed to appear for the exams. We are opposing this partiality and the university is not even listening to us. The officials also insulted our parents," he said.
On Monday, there was no effort to negotiate by the university and it resorted to police intervention. The students have threatened to continue their protest more aggressively if they are not heard.
Police said the group of nearly 30 students laid siege to the university gate at 8.30am and locked it. "We reached the campus at 10am and pacified the students to open the gate," said Sukhveer Singh said.
The protest took a political colour when the ABVP joined the students.
When contacted, the university officials insisted that they were acting according to rules and no relaxation had been given to anybody as alleged by the protesters. "We are following the rules which students were well aware of. All defaulters have been barred. They are just creating a ruckus," said Manvi Arora, deputy registrar.
