British rider Owain Doull will join Team Sky after the Olympic Games in Rio later this summer.

Team principal Sir Dave Brailsford confirmed the signing on Tuesday, although former Team Sky leader Sir Bradley Wiggins had earlier revealed the news at the Tour of California, where he and Doull are racing.

Welshman Doull is currently riding for the WIGGINS team on the road and is on the shortlist to represent Great Britain in the team pursuit in Brazil, where he could be part of the same team as Wiggins, who is chasing a fifth Olympic gold medal.

Doull impressed during the 2015 season, winning the Great Britain U23 road race title and finishing third overall at the Tour of Britain, where he won the points classification after finishing in the top 10 in seven of the eight stages.

"We're very happy to confirm that Owain will be coming over to Team Sky," said Brailsford. "He'll be joining up with us after the Olympics.

"Brad has been pretty excited about having a rider coming over to us from his team and so we probably should have known he would let the cat out of the bag.

From a personal perspective it's always great to be bringing young British talent into Team Sky.

"I think it's pretty self-explanatory why we wanted Owain. He has consistently put in excellent performances on the track and the road for a while now and we think he has the potential to be an important part of the team.

"From a personal perspective it's always great to be bringing young British talent into Team Sky and it reflects very well on the investment and support Sky has provided through the British Cycling programme, the Wiggins team and, of course, Team Sky."
