Mumbai: Finally, a Rs 106-crore solution to 13 flooding spots

During high tide, civic authorities shut the storm-water drains, which let water into the sea. This action results in water-logging. The Britannia pumping station will now pump rain water from the low-lying areas straight to the sea.

For 13 major chronic flooding spots in Hindmata, Sewri and Byculla in central Mumbai, life is going to be different. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has come up with a solution costing Rs 106 crore that will make rain-related mishaps a story of the past.

What it is offering is a pumping station in Britannia, spread on 2,200 sq m, with six pumps. Each pump will be able to flush out 6,000 litres of water per second. The station is part of the civic body's BRIMSTOWAD project, meant to tackle water-logging.

Water-logging in these 13 spots during monsoon has been a perennial problem, primarily due to Mumbai's topography. Mumbai city is like a saucer and central Mumbai is under the lowest part. This makes it vulnerable to water-logging even during light rains. The situation gets worse when the rain is accompanied by high tide.

During high tide, civic authorities shut the storm-water drains, which let water into the sea. This action results in water-logging. The Britannia pumping station will now pump rain water from the low-lying areas straight to the sea.

The pumping station has come after many delays and cost escalation. The major delay was because of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) land. The land, where the project is commissioned, belongs to MbPT, and the BMC pays a monthly rent of Rs 1 lakh to the port trust. BMC has taken the land on lease for the next 30 years.

The BMC has already commissioned pumping stations at Haji Ali, Love Grove, Irla and Cleveland to address water-logging.

"We hope residents will feel a major relief this monsoon," said Trushna Vishwasrao, Leader of the House in the BMC.
