Phillaur's son asks Chander to quit
Jalandhar: Adding to the embarrassment of SAD and beleaguered CPS Avinash Chander, who is facing Enforcement Directorate probe in the synthetic drug racket case, now former minister and Kartarpur MLA Sarwan Singh Phillaur's son Damanvir Singh has sought his resignation.
Sarwan Singh Phillaur, who was holding jail department portfolio, had to resign two years ago after Damanvir was summoned by ED for questioning in the case.
Now this demand of resignation from Avinash Chander would give fresh ammunition to opposition to corner Chander and SAD at a time when they are trying to make drug menace a major issue in 2017 election.
Damanvir on Sunday said that as Chander was being repeatedly summoned by ED and even his kin were being questioned it was affecting the reputation of the party. "Every time he appears for questioning it leads to negative publicity for the party as opposition parties are indulging in protests against him," he said. It is clear that ED was not satisfied with his answers as they were calling his kin also, he added.
Advising Chander to resign, he said all this is demoralizing Akali workers. Initially BJP had also asked for his resignation but later the party went in silent mode on the issue and started maintaining ambivalent stand. His wife and brother were also summoned by the ED.
