Braving incessant rains and power outage in some polling stations, people in the delta districts came out to vote in large numbers in the Assembly elections on Monday.
While Thanjavur district, except Thanjavur constituency where polling has been deferred, recorded 77.4 per cent, Tiruvarur district registered 78.04 per cent, and Nagapattinam district recorded 77 per cent voting at the end of the day.
In Thanjavur district, Orathanad Assembly constituency witnessed 79.6 per cent, Pattukkottai 72.52, Peravurani 78.3, Kumbakonam 76.2, Tiruvidaimarudur 78.25, Papanasam 75.4, and Tiruvaiyaru constituency 81.7 per cent.
In the district, 6,01,935 men turned up at the poll and 6,57,119 women and 14 other gender voters exercised their franchise.
As for the Tiruvarur district, Tiruthuraipoondi Assembly constituency recorded 78.27 per cent (83,127 men and 91,221 women for a total of 1,74,348 votes), Mannargudi 76.54 per cent (86,620 men, 98,042 women and One in the Others category votes for a total of 1,84,663 votes), Tiruvarur 77.12 per cent (93,854 men, 1,01,288 women for a tally of 1,95,142 votes) and Nannilam tallied 80.17 per cent (99,325 men, 1,03,840 women voted for a tally of 2,04,165 votes). At the end of the polling day, 3,62,926 men and 3,94,392 women voted in Tiruvarur district.
In Nagapattinam district, Sirkali Assembly constituency recorded 77 per cent, Mayiladuthurai 72 per cent, Poompuhar 78 per cent, Nagapattinam 73 per cent, Kilvelur 84 per cent and Vedaranyam registered 78 per cent votes in the polling.
In Sirkali constituency 88,190 men and 90,150 women voted, even as 82,550 men, 83,997 women and four voters in the Others category exercised their franchise in Mayiladuthurai constituency. Similarly, in Poompuhar 93,415 men and 98,865 women voted while Nagappattinam Assembly constituency saw 63,869 men and 69,730 women vote in the elections.
In the Kilvelur constituency, 66,892 men and 70,415 women exercised their franchise even as 64,841 men and 74,809 women voted in the Vedaranyam constituency in the district.
In all, in the whole of Nagapattinam district 4,59,757 men, 4,87,966 women and four in the Others category voted.
In Thanjavur district, heavy rains and strong winds brought down a coconut tree that fell on a portion of a polling station at Pazhamaneri village in Tiruvaiyaru constituency injuring 21 persons.
At least a dozen people were treated as outpatients in a nearby hospital and polling was suspended between 1.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m.
In many polling stations across the region, power cut forced the officials to operate in candle lights as auxiliary power was not available though the EVMs operated without any hitch.
In some polling stations lanterns and torch lights were deployed.
