Srilanka releases 34 Indian fishermen

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu May 16 (UNI) The Srilankan government today released all the 34 Indian fishermen, who were arrested on the charges of cross border fishing last month.
They were released two days after Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi sought a permanent solution to the fishemen issue during talks with Srilankan President Maithripala Sirisena in New Delhi.
U.Arulanandam, President of Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen (ARIF) said here that 34 fishermen and 96 Indian fishing boats were under the custody of Srilankan government. Though Lankan Fisheries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera today announced that all the arrested fishermen would be released as a goodwill gesture, the Island nation would not release the Indian boats as part of its stringent policy to check cross border fishing.
