Swathi J.S., student of CKS English School in Hassan, has stood second in the Sate in the SSLC examination by securing 624 marks. She scored 100 in all subjects except Kannada (second language), in which she scored 99. She stands first in Hassan district.

Swathi, native of Jakkanahalli near Kattaya in Hassan taluk, has been staying put in her grandparents’ place in Hassan to study. Her father, Sidde Gowda J.D., is a daily wage worker with the Department of Telecommunications. Mother Latha is a home-maker.

The parents made arrangements for her stay in her grandparents’ house. Her cousin, Satish Kumar, encouraged her to study. When The Hindu called her up, she was at Jakkanahalli, preparing to reach Hassan on request by her school authorities.

As the results were announced on Monday afternoon, she was surprised. “I did not expect that I would be securing the second highest marks, though I was sure of securing more than 615. I am happy”, she said.

No tuition

Swathi said she did not take tuition. “I was just following the teachers who taught in school. I did not require tuition.” She wants to take up science in PU and become an engineer.

Swathi has a younger sister, Lakshmi, studying in Class 9. Asked what tips she would give her sister, she said, “I just tell her to study with peace in mind. She should concentrate on studies and nothing else”.
