Strong earthquake jolts Tokyo, surrounding areas

A strong earthquake hit Japan's Kanto region at about 9:23 p.m. on May 16, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

    The quake, which had an estimated magnitude of 5.6 and struck at a depth of about 40 kilometers, measured a lower 5 on the Japanese intensity scale in the Ibaraki Prefecture city of Omitama, and a 4 in areas within Kanagawa, Saitama, Tochigi and Chiba prefectures, as well as in other parts of Ibaraki Prefecture.

    No tsunami warning was issued after the quake, which registered a 3 on the Japanese intensity scale in central Tokyo.
