Bhubaneswar: The venue for Raahgiri at Janpath on Sunday turned into a veritable joint family house with the theme of the weekly event being International Family Day. Several families braved the scorching heat to throng the venue for the two-hour jamboree.
While the events focused on families, healthy living and sustainable future, the motivational speech of mayor Anant Narayan Jena on togetherness of big and extended family received huge applaud.
Raahgiri has turned out to be such a crowd-puller that one or two members from each family turn up at the event. Raahgiri itself has become a family. We are happy that through the event, we have been able to give the city a new identity, said the mayor.
He used the occasion to seek cooperation of the families for implementation of solid waste management and collection of user fee. He sought help of police to help the civic body implement the community-based waste reduction and solid waste management.
Twin cities police commissioner Y B Khurania, Odia film actress Anu Chaudhury, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Kumar Patasani and city DCP Satyabrata Bhoi graced the occasion.
Patasani stressed on Bharatiya Parampara (Indian Customs). I expect the youths to work towards retaining the values of Indian society. Our joint family tradition is unique and everybody should make efforts to maintain it, Patasani said.
City-based social service organisation Peoples Cultural Centre (Pecuc) organized an event in which several couples participated. A childrens corner was opened for hands-on activities.

Psychiatrist Pranab Mohapatra said joint families are like shock absorbers as there are ample scopes to come out of any sorts of grief and difficulties. Good and quality family life always makes a positive impact on an individuals personal and professional life, he said.
Giving examples of ubiquitous mobile applications, he said in the present world people have opportunities to stay connected to many people at a given point in time. Joint family norm is a tested one and our culture promotes it, he added.
Raising importance of familys security in growing city like Bhubaneswar, the police commissioner said providing security to the families is one of the primary roles of police and it is one of the components in smart city development. Security and safety of families are a holistic responsibility of all and the communities must strive for it, he said.
