AURANGABAD: The death of Satyabhama Kadam, a middle-aged woman living in Patoda taluka of Beed district, around 150km from here, is shrouded in mystery.
She had gone alone to a farm in Saundana village to gather dry wood on Saturday. But, hours later, a local farmer found her dead in a nearby well. While her family suspects it could be a suicide, villagers feel it could be an accidental death while drawing water from the well.
Patoda tehsildar Ganesh Jadhav said they had received conflicting versions about her death.
"A team of officials from the revenue department visited the village immediately after the incident took place. While her family members suspect it to be a suicide, a section of villagers said Kadam could have fallen in the well while drawing water," he said.
Revenue officials said the family owns 1.5 hectare of land. The crop yield this year was unsatisfactory. They had pending farm loan and Kadam had taken up work under Maharashtra National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to make ends meet.
