Sergio Alvarez fired in a screamer from the edge of the box to secure La Liga safety for Sporting Gijon as they beat Villarreal 2-0

Sporting Gijon avoided relegation from La Liga in dramatic circumstances on Sunday afternoon thanks to a stunning strike from Sergio Alvarez.

Abelardo Fernandez's side beat Villarreal 2-0 at home to pip both Getafe and Rayo Vallecano to safety, with Jony Rodriguez Menendez opening the scoring after just eight minutes.

However, it was the home side's crucial second goal from Spain midfielder Alvarez with just 11 minutes remaining that not only secured their survival, but also brought the house down at El Molinon.

In fact, the long-range strike also sent former Barcelona defender and Sporting boss Fernandez into tears on the touchline.

Elsewhere in La Liga on Sunday, both Getafe and Rayo Vallecano were relegated.

Getafe were the only team with matters in their own hands going into the final round of fixtures, but the Madrid-based side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis to end their 12-year stay in the top flight.

Elsewhere, Rayo beat already-relegated Levante 3-1 thanks to goals from Pablo Hernandez, Roberto Trashorras and Miku, but victory couldn't extend their longest ever stay in La Liga of five seasons as they fell a point short of Sporting.
