Boat tragedy: NDRF deployed in rescue operation, five missing

Kalna, Burdwan, May 15 (UNI) As district officials apprehended that at least five people were missing in a boat disaster in the Ganga, experts from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were today deployed in the rescue operation. Official sources today said about 70 to 80 people after attending a fair at Bhabapagla here were returning home to Shantipur town in Nadia district across the river last night, when suddenly the boat capsized under the weight of the passengers. The mishap took place around 2300 hrs, in which at least five people went missing, the district officials said. However, no reports of drowning has been received so far. Police said the boat sank few meters off the ferry ghat at Kalna. The people at Nrisingha ferry ghat at Shantipur, furious over the delay in rescue operation, today burnt six boats, including a launch, a restroom and attacked policemen in which an SI and a constable were injured. Police in a bid to quell the violent mob fired tear gas shells and used rubber bullets. A latest report said the divers of the NDRF traced the boat and efforts were on to retrieve it by a crane. Local people said the rush in the ferry ghat in the late night was due to disruption in services for three hours during evening. UNI PC AKM SB 1730
