SAYEED Hasan Khan beat me by his article ‘Man of substance’ (May 8) on Fazlur Rahman Khan. However, I do not think I was in the right frame of mind to write about my cousin, a few years elder to me and a very close friend, whom I knew as Nawab Bhai. All what he encompassed has been so vividly brought out by Sayeed Hassan Khan Sahib, who also knew him intimately. Hence I would like to share my thoughts about MAH, as I knew him.

He was the last of the Mohicans. A gentleman first and a gentleman last. Alas this crop has fallen on bad times.

He had joined the civil service, being a CSP, and I the Pakistan Air Force. We met again when I was at PAF Base Chaklala and he was with the federal government.

We were together again at Peshawar. He was then serving as Secretary Finance under NWFP Chief Secretary Ghulam Ishaq Khan. We spent a lot of balmy afternoons together discussing old movies by New Theater, Bombay Talkies and songs by Saigal and Jothika Roy.

His knowledge was phenomenal so was his memory. You could discuss any subject under the sun and he could go on and on.

May God Bless his soul.
