In a move to address the ever-increasing need for blood during the summer months, sportspersons of the Railways organised a blood donation camp on Saturday.
The East Coast Railway Sports Association, Waltair, organised a blood donation camp at the Railway Main Hospital, here on Saturday, in association with AS Raja Voluntary Blood Bank under the supervision of Chief Medical Superintend BGS Rao.
More than 110 units of blood were collected from the sportspersons who turned out in large numbers. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager and Sports Officer Yelvender Yadav took part in the blood donation camp. The ECoRSA organises blood donation camps frequently. General secretary B. Appanna Reddy monitored the camp.
The Students’ Blood Donor’s Club, which organised the event, said a study conducted by WHO in 2012 revealed that India was short of three million units of blood a year.
The country, which actually requires 12 million units of blood a year, collects only nine million units. “Our aim is to make every member of the public donate public at least once a year. Also, people in the medical fraternity should donate once in three months,” Dr. Edwin Joe said.
