A six-month-old female elephant calf that was orphaned at Devala near Gudalur was brought to Anna Arignar Zoological Park, Vandalur, on Saturday for better medical treatment by zoo veterinarians.

Earlier, it was kept at an elephant camp at Theppakadu in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR).

The calf was found a few days ago at Kaithakolli near a private plantation. After waiting for the mother elephant to come and claim the calf, the forest staff decided to shift it to the elephant camp at Theppakkadu.

The elephant travelled in a mini cargo vehicle and reached the camp site on Thursday.

“The calf refused food and lacked mother’s feeding and it was looking tired. As a supplement, it was fed hot water mixed with glucose and also given tender coconuts to reduce its body heat,” said K.S.S.V.P. Reddy, Additional Principal, Chief Conservator of Forests and zoo director.
