Robbers run over ASI

Robbers ran over and killed a policeman who tried to stop them after they snatched Rs 15,000 from two women and tried to escape in a car at Begowal village of Kapurthala on Saturday.

Kapurthala: Robbers ran over and killed a policeman who tried to stop them after they snatched Rs 15,000 from two women and tried to escape in a car at Begowal village of Kapurthala on Saturday.
The robbers were nabbed after a chase of about 8 to 10 km by two colleagues of ASI Baldev Kumar, who suffered fatal injuries after being hit by their car. Constable Mohinder Kumar suffered a fracture in his leg.

The robbers snatched money from two women in Begowal at around 3.15 pm. An alert was sounded in the entire district as soon as Begowal police station received information. Kapurthala SSP Rajinder Singh said after getting the alert, policemen at Subhanpur naka started checking cars.
When they signalled a car to stop, its driver ran over Baldev who suffered a head injury and constable Mohinder's leg was fractured.
A few policemen and passersby rushed the policemen to hospital, while their colleagues chased the robbers and alerted their seniors.
Other policemen from Subhanpur police station also chased the robbers, who were finally cornered in the fields by the same party which started following them from the naka where ASI Baldev was injured. The robbers tried to escape after leaving the car and snatching a motorcycle.
ASI Kumar was declared brought dead by doctors at Kapurthala civil hospital. He hailed from Kuka village. Senior officers, including Jalandhar zone inspector general of police (IG) Lok Nath Angra, deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Rajinder Singh and Kapurthala SSP reached the spot and visited the family of the deceased ASI.

SSP Singh said the ASI showed extreme courage while trying to intercepting the robbers. He said the other policemen on duty showed great presence of mind and courage when they chased the robbers while leaving behind their colleagues to take care of the two policemen who were lying in a pool of blood.
The arrested accused were identified as Kirpal Singh and Vijaypal Singh, both from Tarn Taran and Gurpreet Singh Gopi, from Vairowal village. "We are checking their past record to verify their history," the SSP said.
