When the mighty Ravana was finally defeated and he was nearing death, Rama asked Lakshman to go and learn some life-lessons from a great scholar such as Ravana. Lakshman did as his brother said and went and stood near Ravana’s head. Initially Ravana did not say anything – a dejected Lakshman came back to Rama and told him this. Rama then asked him to go at stand near Ravana’s feet as a student would do. Lakshman did just that. Ravana seeing Lakshman standing near his feet told him secrets that would make anyone's life successful. - It is said that Lakshman derived the essence of life from what Ravana said.
It is said that Ravana was considered as the most important devotee of Lord Shiva. Contrary to the belief, Ravana was not a cruel ruler. Although he took Sri Lanka by force from his step brother Kuber, he proved be the most influential Sri Lankan king ever. His reign over Sri Lanka is recorded as the most prosperous era of Lanka.
