Maharashtra: NCP seeks council seats for Munde, Nimbalkar

Similarly, leader of the opposition in the state legislature council Dhananjay Munde’s term also comes to an end in June and has to get re-elected to continue to hold the coveted constitutional post in the Upper House. The elections in the state legislature council have been necessitated following the completion of tenure of 10 members across party lines.

Of the total 10 candidates, BJP is likely to get four candidates elected, Sena three, Congress and NCP three candidates.

The elected members in state legislature assembly cast their vote for the elections in the state council.

The BJP (122 MLAs) followed by Sena (63 MLAs) in state assembly has more vote share compared to Congress (41 MLSs) and NCP (40 MLAs).

The BJP and Sena together can manage seven candidates and Congress and NCP together three candidates. However, NCP is striking a hard bargain from the Congress, which has unsetttled some of its leader.

A senior Congress leader said, “If we concede to NCP’s demand for two seats, we will be left with only one candidate from our party. At least, two senior leaders Narayan Rane and Harshvardhan Patil are the strong contenders for the council seat. Both these leaders lost in the 2014 assembly elections.”
