Shaurya, Atika, Jigrr win thrillers in Nagpur district badminton tournament

The opening day of the Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Memorial District Sub-Junior and Junior Badminton tournament went according to the script with no upset recorded at the newly-constructed Dhanwate National College Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

NAGPUR: The opening day of the Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Memorial District Sub-Junior and Junior Badminton tournament went according to the script with no upset recorded at the newly-constructed Dhanwate National College (DNC) Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.
The five-day tournament is being organized jointly by DNC and Nagpur District Badminton Association.
Although most of the matches were lop-sided, there were some exciting encounters witnessed in the first round which included three-game thrillers.
Shaurya Shukla rallied back superbly to dismiss Sahil Jalgaonkar 14-15, 15-10, 15-8 in the U-13 boys singles.
In the U-13 girls singles, Atika Nayse was down match point but she regrouped herself in the nick of time to oust Aarushi Pandey 14-15, 15-14, 15-10 in 25 minutes.
Jigrr Deshmukh too displayed remarkable composure in overcoming Mohit Bhojwani 15-9, 11-15, 15-14 to enter the U-13 boys second round.
All the seeds had first round byes and they will be seen in action from Sunday morning.
Earlier, the season's opening tournament and new state-of-the-art hall was inaugurated by former MP Vilas Muttemwar. Arunkumar Shelke, president Shivaji Education Society Amravati, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, minister for energy and guardian minister for Nagpur, Sunil Kedar, MLA Saoner, Girish Vyas, MLC Nagpur, Anat Gharad, ex-Trustee NIT, Kunda Vijaykar, President NDBA, Mahadeo Bhuibhar, DNC principal Baban Taywade, DSO Vijay Santan and Suresh Thakre were the guests of honour.
