Rs 20L goes up in smoke in fire at Mumbai ATM
ULHASNAGAR: A fire at an ATM outside Ulhasnagar railway station on Saturday destroyed Rs 20 lakh cash, said sources in the fire brigade and railway.
Though the fire brigade managed to save an adjoining SBI ATM, they could not save the Canara Bank ATM from getting destroyed in the fire, which spread right up to the station skywalk.
The blaze started in the Canara Bank kiosk around 3.30pm, following which the guard called the fire brigade.
By the time the firemen could reach, the blaze had spread to the adjoining SBI ATM and the skywalk. The fire was brought under control by 4.30pm.
Sandeep Deshekar, fire officer of the Ulhasnagar fire station, told TOI, “We found that the Canara Bank ATM had been gutted completely and decided to concentrate on stopping the fire from spreading to the SBI ATM and the skywalk.”
Deshekar said the most probable cause of the fire was a shock circuit. “A Canara Bank official reached the spot and confirmed that there was Rs 20 lakh in the machine, which was reduced to ashes,” Deshekar added.
