Mystery shrouds death of Badlapur woman during train journey to Kerala
The 40-year-old’s body was found four days later on tracks near Udupi in Karnataka.

Body of a 40-year-old woman from Badlapur was found on Thursday near the railway tracks in Barkur in Udupi in Karnataka. Foul play is suspected as her body was found in a thicket right next to the tracks with her dupatta tied tightly around her neck but the jewellery on her intact. Her body was found about 10 metres from the track, four days after she was on a train with her husband and daughter when she went missing en route.

Ajitha was travelling with her husband, Muralidharan, and their 15-year-old daughter Reshma in a 3AC compartment on Mangala Lakshwadeep Express to their hometown Thrissur in Kerala. They boarded the train on May 8 around 9am in Kalyan. Muralidharan told Mumbai Mirror, “After finish dinner around 8.30pm after our train had crossed Madgaon (in Goa), I went to the upper berth to bed around 9.30 pm. When I woke up around 2am, I didn’t find her in her berth. I waited for 15 minutes and then went and checked all the four toilets.”

He said he then brought it to the attention of the rail staff on board the train that his wife was missing. “We started searching for her in adjacent coaches but couldn’t find her. Finally, I registered a missing complaint at Shoranur Junction on May 9,” he said.

On Thursday Muralidharan got a call from GRP saying a dead body of a woman, aged around 40, was found besides the track near Udupi. “I rushed to the spot and identified her,” he said. After the post-mortem, GRP handed over her body on Friday, he said. Ajitha’s body was cremated on Friday at Cheruturati, Thrissur. Muralidharan said, “I suspect foul play.”

Shashidharan, GRP inspector from Shoranur, arrived in Mumbai on Friday to investigate the case. He refused to disclose any breatkthrough in the case, saying, “We are investigating the matter from all possible angles.”
