<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/pb/allmetsports/2015-winter/annapolis-area-christian/boys-basketball/">Annapolis Area Christian</a> senior Justin Williams knows the exact date and time he officially became a Division I basketball recruit. It was Sunday May 1 at 9:13 p.m. and George Washington men’s basketball Coach Mike Lonergan was on the phone following Williams’ official visit to school during the previous weekend.

The Colonials had been watching Williams for almost a year after noticing him in a summer league game, but they hadn’t yet offered a scholarship. Navy was involved as well, but Williams didn’t think going to a military school would be a good fit. Boston University invited him to a camp one summer, but nothing came of it. Delaware also could have been a possibility until Coach Monte Ross got fired last month.

But then two scholarships at George Washington opened up late when forwards Matt Cimino and Anthony Swan transferred after its National Invitational Tournament championship run in April, and Williams “was an under the radar guy that I always liked,” Lonergan wrote in a text message. “No one knew about him because he didn’t play on the big time AAU scene.”

On Tuesday, Williams sent in his national letter-of-intent and became the latest local recruit to join Lonergan in Foggy Bottom.

“It was a slow process. A lot of ups and downs, but GW gave me a chance,” Williams said Thursday. “I was really surprised and really thankful and it was a blessing. If that didn’t happen, I don’t know.”

The athletic 6-foot-3 wing only began playing basketball seriously as an eighth grader, but he developed quickly upon arriving at Annapolis Area Christian from Mount St. Joseph’s for his junior season. As a senior, Williams averaged 24 points per game and led the Eagles to the Maryland Independent Athletic Association finals. He then capped off the season by scoring 41 points when Annapolis Area Christian beat Glenelg Country in the Independent Schools Tournament championship game.

For a while, though, he thought those efforts would go mostly unnoticed. When the high school basketball season ended, Williams had only two Division II scholarship offers. He pondered going to prep school for a year for basketball reasons, but knew he was ready for college academically. He is a straight-A student who plans to major in engineering at George Washington.

Now, Williams will become one of the better underdog stories the moment he steps on campus. The Colonials may have offered him a scholarship at the last minute, but Williams is just grateful the result he’d been hoping for throughout the recruiting process finally came to fruition.

“I’ve been wanting to go to GW ever since they started recruiting me,” he said. “I didn’t know it was going to happen, but I’m just happy they gave me a chance. I was nervous. I was real nervous. But it all worked out in the end.”

Number of college coaches, ranging from the FCS level down to Division III schools, who are expected to be in attendance on Wednesday when the 4th annual Elite Football Camp for top Prince George’s County and Landon football prospects is held at Gwynn Park. The camp is invitation-only and intended for rising seniors, but is free of charge.
