This is the terrifying moment firefighters battled a huge fire that had broken out at a Southampton fireworks factory.

Shocking footage of the blaze has been shared by social media users on Twitter.

Video from the scene shows fireworks sparking away amidst dark smoke and large flames coming from the building.

Emergency services have closed Bitterne Road West and Bullar Road following the explosion as experts investigate.

Locals said the fire broke out after a large explosion.

One local said: "Traffic mental this morning. Road blocked by police at Bitterne road causing delays. Portsmouth road up to Wrights hill is jammed."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service say residents in the surrounding area have been evacuated while motorists are being urged to avoid the area.

Richard Yates told the Daily Echo that he saw the smoke as he was travelling to work in the city centre.

He added: "As soon as I saw the smoke I knew i knew it was the fireworks factory.

"I got here and there were flames about 20ft high, I watched it fall apart."

Arron Sandhu, from nearby Rampart Road, said he was woken by the huge bang caused by the fireworks going off.

"I woke up in shock, thinking 'what was that bang'?

"Twenty fireworks went off at once."
