Principals share their experiences about encouraging students and teachers towards innovation

Innovation is a necessity in this competitive world. Innovation is possible if one could apply the concepts in more than one way and think beyond the classroom learning. At Pushpalata British International School [PBIS], we orient our teachers to reinforce cross curricular links at every possible opportunity and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is among them. We help children learn the STEM concepts easily through practical methods. We give opportunities to express children’s ideas through presentations like models, write-ups, posters, speeches and STEM activities. This unhindered learning environment leads children to employ trial and error methods to learn the concepts.

Since our school is owned by a dedicated maths teacher, our programmes are predominantly aligned with learning of science and mathematics. Projects are converted into modules which involve experiments, trials, data collection, survey, analysis and so on. The Innovator’s Club offers a platform for children to explore research-oriented STEM learning. Contemporary science concepts are discussed in the classroom. Ideas of the students are discussed and debated. In the Robotics Club, students are encouraged to find the solutions for day-to-day problem using robotics. This research-based approach help children set themselves a higher goal.

Monotony brings humdrum; only innovation brings excitement and is a key to success. Day in and day out, new ideas, new technologies and new practices are welcomed around the world. Innovators and thinkers are the most sought after. For any innovation, science and maths play a crucial role. In our school, students are encouraged to pursue creative projects to kindle a scientific tempo. Scientists and industrialists are regularly invited to interact with the children. The school also inaugurated an R & D lab recently to facilitate their quest for knowledge.

As innovation is the key to success, students and teachers in our school are encouraged to do research jointly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Identifying the inquisitive minds in the classes and giving them a road map for innovation has been the big challenge to any educator. Teachers in our school along with students are encouraged to present papers as co-authors in various centres of the country under various forums. These innovations boost their morale to widen their areas of research in other subjects as well.

By allowing children to participate in various exhibitions, be it science or maths or technology, their creative ideas are given a shape. Once their ideas are merited and given a platform to display their skills, we would sow seeds of future Ramanujam,Vikram Sarabhai, Abdul Kalam or Steve Jobs in them.
