Varanasi: Although Janata Dal United president and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar hinted at keeping all options open for the formation of an anti-Bhartiya Janata Party mahagathbandhan in UP by keeping only BJP on target, former JDU chief Sharad Yadav blamed Samajwadi Party for weakening Janata Dal in UP. "In 1993, Mulayam Singh Yadav joined hands with Kanshiram, to weaken the Janata Dal in the state," he said.

The arrival of Bihar CM was scheduled at convention after 2 pm but he along with Sharad Yadav and Tyagi reached there around 1.30 pm. The party had held this event for the office-bearers and workers of district and divisional units of UP. However, JDU leaders were surprised to see huge turnout of workers due to which the sitting arrangements made for about 10,000 proved insufficient. Enthused by it Tyagi said, "The overwhelming response of people indicates that instead of exploring possibilities for alliance formation before 2017 UP elections, we should go among people of state and strengthen our own organization."
The JDU leaders said that Janata Dal had given six Prime Ministers to the country and they wanted to see seventh PM from it. They said that government at Centre could be formed by ensuring victory in UP only hence hard work is required to strengthen the organization in this state. They announced to launch membership campaign of JDU in UP from the beginning of June. Tyagi said Nitish never claimed to be a PM candidate but he has eligibility for this position.
