‘Traffic signal acutely needed at Colva circle’

Margao: The South Goa traffic police have pressed for an electronic traffic signaling system at the old market junction, Margao, in order to prevent accidents.
DySP (traffic) Prabodh Shirvoikar told TOI that the old market circle (Colva circle) has been identified as an accident prone zone and measures have been taken to reduce traffic hazards to the extent possible.

"Slipways have been constructed and we have installed delineators. This now enables the traffic to move in a more organized manner. The traffic island is manned round-the-clock. The need for an electronic traffic signaling system is acutely felt at this busy junction to prevent accidents," Shirvoikar said.
Measures have also been taken to decongest the city bus stand by banning of hotel or factory coaches and heavy vehicles from entering the city limits. Shifting of petrol pumps and high schools located within the city to the outskirts will further lead to decongesting traffic in the city, he added.
The traffic police wrote to MMC to consider implementing pay-parking along certain roads in a bid to allow the free flow of traffic within the city. Besides, the traffic police have asked the MMC to act tough against mobile handcarts which cause obstruction for traffic.
Police had also written to the PWD and concerned authorities to erect signages and paint road markings in various places identified by the traffic cell across the district.
