New Delhi: A day after police stopped an apparently suicidal Naveen Uppal from killing himself after his lover, a married woman, shot herself in his car, police arrested the businessman for murder. Police said on Wednesday that Uppal shot the woman and then driven towards Delhi University with the body while concocting a story about the woman having committed suicide.

Madhur Verma, DCP (north) said that Uppal was arrested after contradicting himself when giving his version of Tuesday evening's events. "We also found in Uppal's possession the pistol that was used to shoot the woman," said the police officer.
On Tuesday, Uppal, a 30-year-old shoe factory owner, had asked his lady friend, Anjali, 40, to meet him at the Vishwavidyalaya metro station to resolve differences rising from his marriage with another woman. After driving to the Yamuna Expressway where they had a heated argument, the couple returned around 7pm to Bonta Park near Delhi University. Another round of arguing ensued, during which Uppal pulled out a pistol and shot Anjali in the temple.
A panicked Uppal called his uncle, who advised him to cook up a story about Anjali committing suicide. The businessman then called up Anjali's sister and told her he too was about to kill himself. Acting on her information, a police team intercepted Uppal near Hindu College.
However, the police realised that the injuries on his hands and neck were self-inflicted. "We also doubted his story about the suicide because the blood stains on his forearm indicated he had fired the shot himself," said Verma.
A team led by Aarti Sharma, SHO (Maurice Nagar), questioned Uppal, who eventually confessed to the murder. He claimed to have planned it a month back and had procured the pistol from an arms dealer in Ayodha. He disclosed that Anjali had been threatening to reveal their relationship to his wife. Anjali had other grouses against Uppal. She wanted him to adopt their two-year-old daughter, which he was loath to do. He had also failed to return the Rs 5 lakh he had borrowed from her a few years ago. The final straw was Uppal's reluctance to meet Anjali during the three months in which he was courting his current wife.

Suspicious about his intentions, Anjali had started recording their conversations on her mobile phone. Knowing this, Naveen had insisted she bring her phone with her for Tuesday's meeting. In the circumstance, Anjali left her phone with her 17-year-old son with husband Sanjay Garg, who had dropped her at the Rithala metro station before she went to meet Uppal.
Police later found that Uppal had selectively deleted some of the contents of his mobile phone, including his conversations with his uncle and relatives after the murder. His family members, including his wife, are also being questioned.
A case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder has been registered against Uppal and he has been taken into police custody for four days. Anjali's body was handed over to her husband after an autopsy on Wednesday.
