Germany: Rewe pledges €40,000 for Central American banana projects

German retailer Rewe has contributed €40,000 (US$45,654) towards ecological and social projects in Costa Rica and Panama via in-store banana sales. Rewe project

For almost a decade Rewe has been involved in sustainable banana production and financing projects in countries of origin and in 2013, the Banana Fund was founded.

This year, the Rewe Group ran a campaign in April raising funds through sales of its ‘Best Choice’ branded bananas as well as Chiquita bananas. For each kilo of bananas sold, Rewe donated ten cents.

In total, €40,000 has been added to the Banana Fund and will be used in support of a Nature Reserve in Changuinola, Panama and to set up a health and nutrition center in poverty-stricken Theobroma where families often can afford to eat only once a day.

In Costa Rica, money will be used to construct a drinking water pipeline in Gavilán where residents currently drink bad quality water from wells, as well as to modernize medical equipment in Waldeck.
