PU paper leaked from Haveri treasury: CID
Bengaluru: The sub-treasury at Hangal town in Haveri district is where the II PU chemistry question paper leaked, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has said.
Kiran Shivaramaiah alias Kumaraswamy, 35, nephew of the suspected kingpin Shivakumaraiah alias Guruji, 66, had entered the strong room with help from Santosh Parashuram Agasi, a second division assistant at the sub-treasury.
He opened the bundles and clicked the photos of the question paper on his mobile phone, said Kishore Chandra, DG-CID. Kiran was arrested from a Tumakuru farmhouse on Tuesday.
"At present, Parashuram is in a Haveri hospital. He fractured his hand in a fight with his cousins over property. We will arrest him after doctors give permission," he said.
According to investigators, Parashuram took Kiran inside the strong room and opened a bundle of question papers. Parashuram is said to have recalled the entire episode in front of the sleuths. "Kiran forwarded the pictures to his associates in Bengaluru and other places via WhatsApp. Shivakumaraiah, who was waiting in city, sent the images to various tutorial heads, asking them to write down model answers for the questions. Later, he sold the photocopies of the answerscripts and question papers at high prices," CID sources said.
Kiran was produced before the I Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court on Wednesday and remanded in 10-day police custody.
CID sources said Shivakumaraiah is blaming his nephew for the leak. "I stopped selling question papers in 2014. Whatever has happened now is Kiran's doing," CID police quoted Shivakumaraiah. However, sources dismissed Shivakumaraiah's claims saying they have solid evidence to prove his involvement. "He is the man who arranged coaching classes (with answerscripts) for many students. He built the network across the state. Most of those arrested in the case, including teachers, know Shivakumaraiah and Kiran well," sources added.
Second leak, same modus operandi
Sleuths said Kiran and Parashuram stole the papers of the rescheduled chemistry paper in the same way. The re-exam was scheduled for March 31. But due to the second leak, the the re-exam was rescheduled for April 12. "What we are looking at is how Parashuram managed to open the strong room. Either his seniors are involved in the offense or Parashuram has a duplicate set of keys with him," sources added.
