Mysuru: Actor and choreographer Prabhu Deva inaugurated the valedictory function of Basava Jayanti.
The two-day function was organised by the department of Kannada and culture at Kalamandir. Gurulingajangamadevara mutt seer Nataraja swami blessed the occasion on Tuesday.
While addressing the gathe ring, Prabhu Deva said that even though he had attended several functions in the past, participating in Basava Jayanti was like attending a family function.
"I like Mysuru Palace which is always a great place to visit", he said.
Prabhu Deva's mother Mahadevamma also participated in the func tion. Prabhu Deva presented awards to women who won in the cultural competitions on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Siddeshwara swami of Jnanayogasharama in Vijayapura in his special lecture said th at people should broaden their mind to experience the beauty of the world. "We are here to do good work. Everybody should follow the path shown by Basavanna", he said.
Later thinker Chakravarthy Sulibele felicitated the family members of martyrs Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad and Sepoy Mahesh PN who lost their lives recently in Siachen avalanche along with seven other soldiers.

Delivering the valedictory speech, Karnataka Folklore University former vice-chancellor Ambalike Hiriyanna said that through Basava philosophy a new society should be built where there is caste and gender equality.
BJP leader Shankar Mahadeva Bidari said that more lingayat community should unite and fight against the injustice meted to the community. Considering the community population, the number of lingayats in government jobs is very less.
MLA and NICE chief Ashok Kheny spoke during the event.
