Alamzeb Afridi quizzed by city cops in 2008 Surat bomb planting case

City police on Tuesday took custody of Alamzeb Afridi (30), a member of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) later renamed as Indian Mujahideen (IM), for his alleged role in Surat bomb planting case of 2008.

Surat: City police on Tuesday took custody of Alamzeb Afridi (30), a member of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) later renamed as Indian Mujahideen (IM), for his alleged role in Surat bomb planting case of 2008. As many as 29 unexploded bombs were discovered from city by bomb disposal squad within span of a week after series of bomb blasts rocked Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008.
Investigation revealed that Afridi, resident of Juhapura in Ahmedabad, was allegedly present in the training camp organised by SIMI to train the terrorists in Pavagadh before the blasts.
City police are to investigate role of Afridi in the blasts and why he was present at the training camp.
After questioning in custody by Ahmedabad police, Afridi was arrested by city police.
He is likely to be produced in court on Wednesday for seeking his police custody for investigate his role in Surat bomb planting cases. tnn
"We need to question him about his role in Surat case. Investigation so far revealed that he was present in training camp for terrorists at Pavagadh," said Bhakti Thakar, Surat assistant commissioner of police, E Division. Thakar is investigating the Surat bomb planting case currently.
After finding of first bomb on July 27 from City Light area total 29 bombs and two explosive laden cars were recovered from city. The bombs were found planted behind advertising banners on flyover and even on tree in the city.
City police has so far arrested over 70 accused in the bomb planting case who are also involved in Ahmedabad bomb blasts. Afridi was nabbed by Telangana anti-terrorist squad in January 2016 from Bengaluru and following his confession of role in 2014 Bangaluru bomb blast NIA arrested him. He was later handed over to Ahmedabad police for investigation.
