West Ham to bid for Benteke and Walcott

West Ham United are planning a major summer spending spree, according to reports in the Daily Mail and Daily Express. The Mail report that manager Slaven Bilic is trying to lure Arsenal's Theo Walcott to Stratford with promises of first-team football, with highly-rated Belgium international forward Michy Batshuayi also on the Hammers' radar. The Express also link Walcott with a move to east London, but say that Liverpool flop Christian Benteke is the primary target for Bilic this summer. Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan is quoted as saying: "We're going to make a £20m or £25m bid for a player in England later this week. Whatever happens we intend to bring a top striker in."
Paper Round's view: West Ham are flush with cash, not just from their lofty league finish and the mega-money television deal, but also from the reported 50,000 season ticket sales for the club's debut season at the Olympic Stadium - a ground that the club are getting on the cheap, remember. So a summer spending spree makes sense. However, splashing that cash on Walcott makes a great deal less sense. The Hammers have good attacking midfielders and wide forwards already and could do better than wasting time on Walcott. Benteke is a different matter. The Belgian has hardly set the world alight at Anfield, but he's a quality player and a definite upgrade on Andy Carroll as a focal point for that West Ham attack.

Pochettino eyes Lallana reunion

Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring Adam Lallana to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to The Sun. The Argentine manager developed Lallana during his time at Southampton and has been impressed with the player's progress since his £25m move to Liverpool. Spurs are looking to tempt the Anfield club into selling the England international for £20m, as Mario Gotze and Marco Reus are reportedly both on their way to Merseyside.
Paper Round’s view: Lallana is a tidy footballer who would suit Spurs' style, but that's where this story begins and ends. At the age of 27 Lallana is outside the bracket that Daniel Levy usually considers, and at £20m he would be a pretty expensive back-up - acknowledging that he's hardly likely to oust Christian Eriksen or Dele Alli from the Spurs starting line-up. And then there's the Liverpool angle. Why would the Reds accept a loss on a player who has shown signs of improvement and become a regular starter? And as for both Gotze and Reus moving to Merseyside - keep dreaming.

Vardy to stay with his Leicester 'brothers'

Jamie Vardy will stay at Leicester City for next season - reports The Mirror. England international Vardy has been linked with a number of Europe's bigger clubs after his title-winning season with the Foxes, but the former Fleetwood forward insists that the attitude and togetherness of the squad will keep him at the King Power. Vardy also believes that both Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante will snub transfer approaches from the European superpowers this summer, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all linked.
Paper Round’s view: Vardy's attitude is admirable and you have to hope that he's right. It would be a crying shame to see this Leicester City squad plundered before they even give the Champions League a proper crack, but reality suggests that were the biggest clubs in Europe to come a-calling then most of Leicester players would be tempted. It's hard to see Vardy fitting the bill for the top teams, but Mahrez and Kante have the qualities that would attract the very best. Good luck Foxes fans, this could be a long summer of speculation.

Terry pleads with Conte for a Chelsea chance

John Terry has begged new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte to give him a contract for next season, according to The Metro. The club captain is out of contract in the summer and will miss the final two games of the season after being sent off against Sunderland on Saturday. New boss Conte is reportedly keen to shift Terry on, but the centre-back has pleaded with his possible gaffer, saying: "I’m a Chelsea player and that has been my club since the age of 14. I love Chelsea."
Paper Round’s view: The fact that Terry wants to stay at Chelsea is not in doubt. But now is the time for the club to move him on. He's not getting any younger, not getting any quicker, and (most importantly) not getting any more keen to spend time on the bench. It would be madness to base a defence around a 35-year-old with a domineering dressing-room presence. And you can add in Conte's preferred tactics as another reason to ship Terry out. The Italian likes to play a pressing game with a high defensive line, but Terry didn't have the pace to play that style in his early 20s, never mind his mid 30's. It's time to move on, John.
