Lalji sent to Sabarmati jail

Palanpur/Ahmedabad: Sardar Patel Group (SPG) convener Lalji Patel was sent to judicial custody by a local court in Mehsana on Monday after his five-day police remand got over.
Lalji was produced before Additional judicial magistrate S C Mackwana, who sent him to judicial custody. He was taken to Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad where the Patidar leader said that negotiation between Patidar community leaders and the state government is going on.
Patel, who was arrested in connection the violence that broke out during the ‘jail bharo' rally in Mehsana last month, also hoped for a compromise with the government on the issue of quota agitation.
Lalji said, "Negotiation is going on and we will soon reach a compromise." He was answering query about recent development on the quota agitation.
When asked about differences between his group and Hardik Patel- led Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), Lalji said, "Both are working for the welfare of Patidar community."
Lalji was arrested on May 4 by Mehsana police from a private hospital where he was taking treatment of head injury after he was named in an FIR along with 36 others. He had then alleged he sustained injuries in police lathi-charge while the police maintained that he got hurt during stone pelting by the mob gathered for the rally. Lalji and others have been booked under charges of attempt to murder, attempt to culpable homicide, rioting, and other sections of Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
