Mass viewing of transit of Mercury arranged

According to an official release here today, the main event will be organized in the Puducherry Science Centre in Lawspet along with six other locations including four in Puducherry (Kalapet Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya, Nonankuppam Old Bridge, Bahour, Karaikkal Beach and in Mahe near the Mahe River.
In 100 years, Mercury crosses the Sun’s disc about 13 times and this crossing of Mercury across the Sun’s disc is called the Transit of Mercury. Since Earth is the third planet from the Sun, there are many occassions when Mercury comes in a straight line between the Earth and the Sun. Just like how the Moon comes in between the Earth and Sun during a Lunar Eclipse, the planet Mercury also comes in a straight line between the Earth and the Sun.
Since the size of Mercury is very small, when it crosses between the Earth and the Sun, the shadow of Mercury looks like a small dot crossing the Solar disc. Mercury looks like a bigger sun spot crossing the solar disc unlike Venus whose transit appears to be a much larger spot compared to that of Mercury.
There is no row at position 0.
