Restaurant Review: Hyderabadi Biryani
Hyderabadi Biryani at Chand kheda, Ahmedabad, is a restaurant that of fers Andhra and Hyderabadi cuisines, besides other Indian food.
DECOR
Unlike their restaurant at Bodakdev which is themed on Princely Hyderabad, Hyderabadi Biryani in Chandkheda is less opulent in its décor but is spacious, well-lit and comfortably furnished. The restaurant has large images of Hyderabad's landmarks to go with its name and cuisine.
FOOD
While Hyderabadi Biryani offers the usual kebabs and tikkas, their speciality is their section called Shahi Shuruat Tawa Se which covers spicy, deep-fried starters of the kind popular in Andhra and Tamil Nadu.
Some of these dry snack dishes are Chicken 65, Hyderabadi Chilly Paneer, Chilly Gobi, Fish Fry, Ginger Chicken, Chilly Mushroom and Prawns 65. For seafood buffs, the must have is the Andhra Crab Fry, a small crab fried whole with pepper and other spices that balance the sweetness of the crab meat inside the shell. The Andhra Pomfret is a dish with a whole fish coated with masala paste and fried till brown.

For the main course, the house special is the Chepala Pulusu (Also written as Chaapal Pulsu), with a tomato, onion and curry leaf gravy dominated by the sweet-tart taste of tamarind. Sorrel leaves called gongura are used in specials usually made on weekends like Andhra Gongura MuttonChicken Curry. For an earthy flavor, you could try their Country Chicken Curry. The Chilly Prawns is a pungent dish. Their vegetarian dishes are mostly North Indian, but on prior notice they can also put together a selection of spicy and tart Andhra vegetarian dishes. After the hot Andhra food, their excellent Andhra Curd Rice goes down well.
Expectedly for its name, this restaurant has many biryanis on offer. The Hyderabadi Dum Subz Biryani is packed with flavor. The Hyderabadi Dum ChickenMutton Biryani and the Chicken Handi Biryani are also very good. The menu also has a vegandeggs biryani and a kheema biryani. The leafy Anokhi Pulao has a distinctive sweet-sour flavor.
For dessert, both their Khubani ka Meetha (apricot puree) and Kaddu ka Halwa are worth having.
PLUS AND MINUS
This is one of the few places in Ahmedabad that offers a selection of Andhra food, however their specialties are not always available it is a good idea to call ahead to know the specials of the day.
