In the backdrop of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) detaining DTC A. Mohan for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his income, Transport Minister Siddha Raghava Rao has cautioned officials that the Government would not tolerate corruption and would take stern action against corrupt officials.

The Minister reviewed the performance of the Transport Department here on Sunday. “The Government has given a fitment of 43 per cent recently. I don’t see any need to resort to corrupt practices.” The employees also should think about repercussions and impact of their corrupt practices on their families. “You have children, who go to schools and colleges. You need to perform marriage of your children. Just think what would be the impact on their future if you faced corruption charges and were put behind bars?”

Referring to the achievements of the department, Mr. Raghava Rao said the Government had set a target of Rs. 1976.84 crore for 2015-16.

The department, however, achieved Rs. 2128.42 crore, which is a 20 per cent growth. The department achieved 100 per cent target in all categories except fee.

Life tax target surpassed

The life tax target was Rs. 958 crore, while the collections were Rs. 964.94 crore. The Government received Rs. 634 crore as quarterly tax, Rs. 195.33 crore as fee, and Rs. 247 crore towards detections, he said.

The Minister said Kurnool district had topped in the State by registering a growth of 28.12 per cent, while YSR Kadapa registered 6.63 per cent, which is the lowest. “The Government set a target of Rs. 2554 crore for the year 2016-17.”

Road accidents

Mr. Raghava Rao said the Government had identified 1140 black spots — accident prone areas — and could address the issue in 840 places by taking steps like erection of caution boards, road widening etc.

Land acquisition was a problem in the rest. The land owners have approached courts against the acquisitions. The District Collectors were asked to speed up the process of land acquisition, he said.

When asked, the Minister said the Government would take a decision on speed governors shortly.

Special Chief Secretary Sam Bob and Transport Commissioner Balasubrahmanyam and others were present.
