DVAC case: HC notice to ex-MLA

May 09, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has ordered notice to former Vellore MLA and leader of Tamil Maanila Congress C. Gnanasekaran on a revision petition moved by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) assailing an order discharging the MLA and his wife in a Rs. 3.15 crore disproportionate wealth case.

The DVAC submitted that Mr. Gnanasekaran had acquired properties in his name and that of his wife worth about Rs 3.15 crore when he was the MLA of Vellore constituency from May 13, 2006 to May 14, 2011. A case for offences punishable under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act was filed against the former MLA and the trial was conducted in a special court in Vellore.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gnanasekaran and his wife moved applications to discharge them from the case, which was allowed by the special court on February 29.

Challenging the order, DVAC has contended that the trial court had failed to consider the fact that there were more than sufficient materials available on records produced by it to proceed with the framing of charges. When the revision petition came up for hearing, Justice P. Devadoss ordered notice.
