Seasoned wrestler Mausam Khatri narrowly missed out on an Olympic berth, losing to Mongolian Khuderbulga Dorjkhand 8-6 in the 97kg freestyle semifinals of the second Olympic Games World qualifying tournament in Istanbul on Sunday.

Mausam defeated Nikolaos Papaoikonomou of Greece 10-0 and Erik Sven Thiele of Germany 8-4 before bowing out just a step away from qualification.

The other two Indians in the fray in the freestyle event — Gopal Yadav and Hitender — lost in the early rounds of the 86kg and 125kg categories.

India clinched six wrestling places, including three in freestyle, two in women and one in Greco Roman, for the Rio Olympics.
