Port Elizabeth – The DA's Athol Trollip has called on head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Shaun Abrahams, to explain why Nelson Mandela Bay’s head of security, Linda Mti, had not been criminally charged.
Mti was at one point head of the ANC in the Eastern Cape and later national commissioner of correctional services.
He was accused of profiting hugely from catering tenders awarded by the department of correctional services while it was under his stewardship.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) found the existence of an “improper and corrupt” relationship between senior correctional services officials and the Bosasa Group, which had received massive tenders since 2004 to provide catering services, security equipment, televisions and modern fencing to prisons.
Allegedly among them was Mti, who had had a mansion built for him by Bosasa.
Trollip, in a statement issued on Sunday, said he had sought a range of answers from Abrahams.
“I have also requested a prosecution timeline on the NPA’s open docket on Mti, with specific reference to proposed court dates and investigation findings,” he said.
“The DA has fought Mti’s appointment to NMB’s safety and security head since it was first proposed by Danny Jordaan," he said.
“Mayor Jordaan has now broken his promise to take back the city by giving the responsibility of safety and security to a convicted drunk driving criminal and alleged billion rand fraudster."
