Kolkata: A passenger travelling on Shatabdi Express was in for a shock on Saturday morning when he found a cockroach in an omelette he was served for breakfast.
Samaresh Dey, who was headed for Howrah, lodged a complaint with the catering manager on the train in the presence of ticket checking staff and other railway personnel. "We boarded the C3 coach of the train from New Jalpaiguri at 5.30am.
Breakfast was served around 8.15am after the train left Barsoi," said Dey's co-passenger Biswajit Nandi, a resident of Odlabari in Jalpaiguri. "Dey, who was sitting next to me, had just taken a bite of the omelette when he spotted the cockroach. He called the catering attendant and complained. The attendant tried to take away the breakfast tray, promising to replace it with a fresh one but others didn't allow it. We called the catering manager and TTE. We lodged a complaint and plan to write to railway minister Suresh Prabhu."
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) officials in Kolkata said the Northeast Frontier Railway managed the catering through a private caterer. A few months ago, the caterer was reportedly hauled up for supplying inferior water bottles on Shatabdi.
"The Railway Board has ordered the IRCTC to manage all catering services gradually. Hopefully, such incidents won't occur after that," an official said.
