Veena accuses UDF of destroying LDF posters

May 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

LDF candidate in the Aranmula Assembly constituency, Veena George, has accused the UDF of destroying her posters, flex boards, and other campaign materials.

Addressing the media here on Saturday, Ms. George alleged that her posters, and flex boards set up along the Thiruvalla-Kumbazha Road were found to have been “intentionally destroyed” on Friday night. LDF leaders K. Ananthagopan, A. Padmakumar, and Chengara Surendran said the front had filed a complaint to the Election Commission and the police in this regard.

Meanwhile, the LDF election committee filed a petition before the District Election Officer here on Saturday, alleging violation of the model code of conduct by UDF candidate K. Sivadasan Nair.

The petition said the leaflet, ‘Aranmulayude Ulthudippu, Oru Vikasana Bullettin’, had photographs of the Aranmula temple, a mosque, and a church in Pathanamthitta, besides a photograph of the candidate with two bishops printed on it in violation of the code of conduct.

The petition alleged that the publication of the leaflet was illegal under Section 123(3) of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951.

The use of religious symbols is prohibited by law, it said.

“The leaflet was published with the consent and qualification of Mr. Sivadasan Nair,” the petition alleged.
