Hyderabad: An event manager, a sweet shop owner and a car driver were arrested by the Abids police on Saturday for stealing a very high frequency (VHF) handset of a sub-inspector.
On May 1, Abids traffic sub-inspector D Venkateshwarlu was performing duties near Nizam college. As he was manning traffic, he saw a speeding Innova. On noticing the SI, driver Gulam Mukthar Ahmed slowed down.
Sweet shop owner Lakhan Tiwari, event managers Ankith Mantri and Sunil Pandey were other occupants of the vehicle. However, as they were nearing the SI, the group snatched his VHF handset and sped away. "We collected the footage from about 200 CCTV cameras installed as part of 'Community CC Cameras Project' in Abids, Sultan Bazar, Afzalgunj and Begum Bazar to track the vehicle. Examination of the CCTV footage helped in obtaining images of the culprits and tracking the route of the vehicle," deputy commissioner of police (Central Zone) VB Kamalasan Reddy said in an official release. Based on the lead, the culprits were identified and Gulam Mukthar Ahmed, Lakhan Tiwari and Ankith Mantri and were nabbed from their respective residences at Masab Tank, Feelkhanna and Begum Bazar.
"The VHF set is intact. The kept it with themselves afraid of returning the instrument later,"Abids inspector (detective) N Mohan Rao said.
