Vincenzo Montella can only leave Sampdoria for Italy or Man United

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has given his blessing for manager Vincenzo Montella to take the Italy job if the position is offered if the position is offered to the former Azzurri striker.

Montella has been touted as one of the favourites to succeed Antonio Conte, who is joining Chelsea after the European Championship in the summer, and the owner of the Genoa-based side has no qualms if the ex-Fiorentina boss left.

Ferrero told reporters: "Could Montella leave for the national team? Yes, it would be a gift, and important continuation of the work done by a great coach like Conte.

"Montella is going forward in football, if he wants to go he's not my wife, I haven't married him. For me he'll be coach of Sampdoria next year, because he has a contract and I haven't heard any other news.

"Then when the national team or Manchester United come calling, I love him and he can go wherever he wants."

Former national team coach Roberto Donadoni is being linked with the job alongside Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri.

Montella took over at Sampdoria in November but the club have yet to secure their Serie A survival with two games remaining.
