Punjab: Discrepancy in ETT test results, students approach govt for relief

Students alleged that SCERT has not followed its own guidelines while preparing question papers, which affected results.

Vipan Kumar was surprised when he failed a subject while pursuing a diploma in elementary teacher training (ETT) offered by the state council of education research and training (SCERT). He had scored 48 out of a maximum of 100 in Environment, two short of the minimum marks to pass a subject. This, when the existing policy is to pass the student if he or she were to fail a subject by maximum three marks.

In another case, a student who scored 44 marks in another subject was declared passed. Many have now approached the government complaining of the discrepancy in awarding marks and declaring results.

The exam was conducted in June 2015, while the results were announced this March. Students alleged that SCERT has not followed its own guidelines while preparing question papers, which affected results.

“We do not know what criteria has been adopted for evaluation. Once our results are out, which is itself late, we are then asked to re-appear for the paper almost immediately,” said one such student. “We have attached the copy of the same along with the roll numbers and marks and sent a complaint to the Secretary School education to look into this matter.”

“The SCERT is playing with the future of the students. This is not the first time that they have not followed their own guidelines,” said Nishant Kumar, Alternative Innovative Education ETT Union Punjab.

Festive offer

“Some discrepancies seem to have crept into the published results,” said Sukhdev Singh Kahlon, Director, SCERT. “The matter will be inquired into and will be fixed as soon as possible.”

“I believe that the discrepancies may have crept in due to the volume of work because of which everyone is overburdened. However, everything, including grace marks, will looked into and where there is merit for correction, we will do that,” the director added.
